Vietnamese player Le Quang Liem’s excellent performance held the Chess World Cup defending champion, Peter Svidler from Russia, to a draw in the first leg match of the tournament’s fourth round on August 20.

Holding the white pieces Liem started confidently but could not overwhelm his much stronger rival who quickly established a solid defence.

Although the Russian opponent had one more pawn than Liem, he could not gain the upper hand to advance further 38 moves.

The two players will play the return leg match later the same day.

With 9.4 points added after seven matches Liem has jumped seven notches to World No.35.
