Vietnam finish 2nd at world champs

Top martial artist Nguyen Dinh Toan and Nguyen Minh Tu pocketed gold medal during the pair event at the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Poomsae (Performance) Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Sunday night.

The duo beat out Uzbekistan’s Lee Aleksandr and Dergach Irina, who took the silver. The bronze went to Turkey’s Rabia Kim and Fazli Karisik and Iran’s Fatemeh Roushan Dashtaki and Akbar Forouzan.

Earlier, Tu secured a bronze medal in the junior individual event and Le Anh Minh pocketed the silver. Viet Nam ranked second in the total medal count at the event with two gold medals and one silver and one bronze.

Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thu Ngan, Nguyen Thi Kim and Chau Van Tuyet won the gold medal in the women’s first team division event.

More than 400 athletes from 59 countries competed at the three-day event that took place at the Universal Sports Palace in Uzbekistan.

South Korea clinched nine gold medals and two silver medals to win the overall title at the championships

Vietnam’s top martial artist Toan, 24, has been the most successful athlete on the national squad since he joined in 2006.

In his national team debut at the World Championships in Seoul, South Korea, he pocketed a silver medal.

The Hanoian secured a bronze medal at an event in Beijing one year later.

At the World Championship in Cairo last year, Toan and Tu also won a gold medal.

Toan won the gold at the Asian Championship in Kazakhstan in May.
