Japanese coach returns to lead HCM City FC

The former head coach of Vietnam national team Toshiya Miura is negotiating to lead HCM City FC, said HCM City FC's chairman Le Cong Vinh on November 24.

They are negotiating salary, contract term and other details. HCM City FC wants to renew the contract every year to monitor the team's success, but Miura wants a two-year term.

The club's leaders promised a higher salary for Miura than the monthly wage of USD15,000 that the Japanese coach received while being the head coach of Vietnam national team. The Vietnam Football Federation are currently paying USD20,000 a month to South Korean coach Park Hang Seo to lead the national team.

Miura flew to Vietnam to watch the match between HCM City FC against Quang Ninh FC during the 25th round of V-League at Thong Nhat Stadium on November 19. HCM City FC lost 2-4. It is currently the third from the bottom.

A series of loss in V-League resulted in former HCM City FC's head coach Alain Fiard being fired. Fiard was praised last year for helping the team remain in the top division.

HCM City FC have spent a lot on players, but are said to be weaker than many other teams in the league.

Toshiya Miura was dismissed as the coach of the Vietnamese national football team in January 2016 when he only had two months left on contract with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).

VFF deputy chairman Tran Quoc Tuan then said they ended the contract early because "Miura didn't create a suitable playing style for the team."

Miura led Vietnam team to third place in AFF Cup 2014 and won bronze medals at the SEA Games in 2015. He was criticised recently for not winning the AFC U23 Championship 2016 and losing 3-0 against Thailand in a World Cup qualifying match.
