More than 290 badminton players from 18 countries around the world are competing in the 10th edition of the Ciputra Hanoi-Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge, which is being held at Tay Ho district’s gymnasium in Hanoi from March 20 to 25.

Vietnam's no. 1 badminton player, Nguyen Tien Minh

The annual tournament offers US$25,000 in prize money for five categories: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The singles champions will receive US$1,875 each and the doubles winners will get US$1,975.

Vietnam is being represented by 67 competitors, among whom the reigning men’s singles champion Nguyen Tien Minh (world no. 48) is the most noticeable name. Minh is seeded second this year, behind the Japanese top seed, world no. 25, Kento Momota.

Alongside Momota, world no. 54 Pannawit Thongnuam (Thailand) and world no. 58 Lin Yu Hsien (Chinese Taipei) are also expected to offer tough competition for Tien Minh’s bid to defend the title he won in 2017.

World no. 82 Pham Cao Cuong is the second biggest hope for Vietnam in the men’s singles event, while 2017 bronze medalist Vu Thi Trang is the no. 1 hope for the host country in the women’s singles discipline.
