In previous years, the festivals were only held in the southern bank of the Perfume River. Hue City People's Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Thanh said next year festival venue would be bigger as it will be held on both banks of the river.

"Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street is being pedestrianised and will be opened in late 2018. Festival-goers can use Truong Tien Bridge and parks will also be upgraded and become one of the highlights for the 2019 festival," Thanh said at a recent meeting with local cultural experts to discuss the Hue Traditional Craft Festival 2019.

Many cultural experts at the meeting agreed that the traditional craft festival should be extended from six to 10 days. The opening ceremony and main events will be held from April 19 to 21, 2019 and other activities will be last until May 1.

Songwriter Le Phung commented that Hue Traditional Craft Festival should be a long event with many highlights after a colourful opening ceremony.

Former head of Hue Department of Culture and Sports Nguyen Xuan Hoa agreed, saying that long preparation was a feature of Hue traditional crafts. Artisans will have enough time to present their products. The festival must include useful measures to boost the position of traditional craft villages and have a long-lasting impact on tourists.

Other attendees said the authorities were still unable to exploit Hue's advantages. Tran Dinh Hang, Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Art Studies in Hue, said the cultures in Nguyen Dynasty and Buddhism could be great attractions.

"Many people compliment chefs from Hue. We have to further promote our advantages. For example, Hue women should be employed for ao dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) fashion shows in Hue instead of models," he said.

Hue City People's Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Thanh promised he would gather public opinions.
