Women’s football team maintain ranking as top side in Southeast Asia

The Vietnamese women’s national football team have kept their spot as the top team in Southeast Asia following the release of the latest FIFA rankings.

The national team maintain their spot as the region’s strongest side despite dropping three places from 32nd to 35th in the world rankings.

Indeed, the team’s recent fixtures have seen head coach Mai Duc Chung’s side lose three games and record a single win whilst competing in the qualifying round of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The women’s national team got off to a winning start by recording a comfortable 1-0 win over Myanmar before losing 3-0 to the Republic of Korea (RoK) in Group A’s third qualifying round. This was before taking on Australia in a two-leg play-off round for a place in the Olympics, with the Vietnamese players suffering back to back defeats with scores of 5-0 and 2-1.

With a total of 1,657 points, the Vietnamese women’s side are leading the way in Southeast Asian and are far ahead of Thailand in second place on 1,596 points, 39th in the world.

In Asia, Vietnam ranks sixth, behind Australia, world number seven, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, world number 10, Japan, world number 11, China, world number 15, and the RoK, world number 18.

The United States are top of the world rankings with 2,714 points, followed by Germany at 2,078 points, France in third position, and the Netherlands in fourth.
