All FIFA member associations, including Vietnam, will receive a grant of US$1.5 million each under the terms of FIFA’s COVID-19 relief plan to alleviate the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as announced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during his virtual meeting with senior officials of member associations in Southeast Asia on July 29.

Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Tran Quoc Tuan represented the VFF to give opinions at the event, which also saw the attendance of President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

The FIFA boss announced the conclusion of the Bureau of the FIFA Council, stating that a universal solidarity grant of US$1 million is being made available to all FIFA member associations, and an additional grant of US$500,000 is being allocated specifically to women’s football.

This is very necessary funding for the member federations in the context that their revenue has been heavily affected by COVID-19. Football activities failing to take place as planned have caused a deficit in revenue related to television rights, ticket sales and sponsorships. The FIFA support will contribute to helping member associations to maintain activities and continue to invest in the target projects, especially for women’s football.

With its speedy spread and complicated developments, COVID-19 has brought all international football activities to a halt since it broke out on a global scale. Due to force majeure causes, FIFA tournaments have been unable to go ahead as planned, leading the teams’ schedules to be completely frozen at the present time.

At the meeting, VFF Permanent Vice President Tran Quoc Tuan briefly reported on Vietnam’s football activities in recent times. Thanks to the country’s effective efforts in containing the pandemic, domestic football events have been allowed to resume with more than 400 matches across professional and youth tournaments, attracting huge attention from fans. In addition, Vietnamese football has been actively involved in community activities to join hands with the whole nation in pushing back the disease.

The operational results of Vietnamese football have impressed and received high appreciation from the FIFA boss, Tuan said.

He stated that FIFA President Infantino empathised with the difficulties and concerns of member associations regarding the impact of the disease on the organisation of football events in the near future, affirming that FIFA and the AFC would continue to closely monitor the situation and issue timely assistance measures for member associations.
