Tung Duong to bring the song “Doc dao” to foreign audiences

What will be your next stop after France and Japan?

I’ll join Nguyen Le performing abroad from this summer through next year. I don’t expect to establish a reputation there but would like to introduce myself to audiences in Europe.

I want to become an independent artist and bring my best to the audience worldwide to widen my network beyond Vietnam.

Who will help you to organise these shows?

A group of overseas Vietnamese in France who are avid fans of Nguyen Le will help for the European tour. I’ve also received a sponsorship offer for the Japanese tour. I look forward to going in front of new audiences.

In the previous foreign shows I sang traditional music. However, this time I want to promote the song “Doc dao”, and am not too concerned with the fees.

Do you think many overseas Vietnamese listen to traditional music?

Not really. Many overseas Vietnamese have lived away from their country for years, and have grown a taste for contemporary music. But young Vietnamese in foreign countries have kept in touch with modern Vietnamese music. I hope to show them how different modern Vietnamese music is.

Traditional wins the audience's attention. This show will be different and I will perform more classic songs if the audience wants it.

Are you appreciated in foreign countries?

Yes. There are groups of foreign audiences that really like my performing style. Once I sang the song “Hoa sua”, and an elderly Vietnamese said she loved the song but could not remember what type of flower was because she had not been back to Vietnam for so long.

The writer Do Hoang Dieu commented once that he was disappointed seeing you having to sell your own discs after a performance in the US. But that is not rare for popular singers who perform abroad, is it?

Popular singers such as Thanh Lam and Ha Tran have sold their discs at foreign shows. The audience likes to get close to the artists.

Did you feel ashamed the first time you had to sell your own discs?

I felt a bit ashamed but that way of selling is really effective because people want some personal contact with a singer.
