A wide range of short documentaries by young domestic and foreign filmmakers are set to screen at the Mini DocFest 2014 at the Goethe Institute in Hanoi from October 29-November 4.

Truong Que Chi’s film entitled “Mat Troi Den” (Black Sun) – a winner at this year’s Oberhausen International Short Film Festival – will kick off the series on October 29 along with Nguyen Thuy Tien’s “1953 Case” combining documentary with performance, and Ta Minh Duc’s “Phim So 1” (Film No. 1) mixing narrative and documentary elements.

On the second day, a programme of the latest productions of the DocLab Basic Workshop 2013 will provide an insight into the establishment and development process of a new generation of independent documentary and experimental filmmakers in Hanoi.

On the same day, Osaka-based German filmmaker Werner Penzel will also introduce his black and white 35mm documentary film “Step Across the Border”, which won “Best Documentary” at the European Film Awards in 1990.

A number of documentary films selected from ChopShots Documentary Film Festival Southeast Asia in Jakarta will screen on the last day.

The Mini Doc Festival will close with Siu Pham’s experimental film “Can Phong Cua Me” (Homostratus), which received the Best Unique Vision award at Queen World Film Festival this year in New York.

Within the framework of the event, a series of activities including a discussion with invited Vietnamese independent and experimental filmmakers, a presentation led by the Film Study Group (FSG) on Chris Marker’s films, a workshop on Independent Cinema with Siu Pham, and a special presentation of videos from Harun Farocki’s Hanoi workshop “Labor in a Single Shot” are planned.
