Musician Phan Huynh Dieu passes away

Phan Huynh Dieu was born on November 11, 1924 in Danang city. He was well-known as one of the most outstanding Vietnamese musicians of the 20th century.


He started his composing career in 1940 with the love song ‘Trau cau’ (Betel and Areca).

He joined the army during the resistance war against French colonialism and wrote many revolutionary pieces including ‘Nho on Ho Chu Tich’ (Be grateful to President Ho) and ‘Que toi o mien Nam’ (My hometown is in the south).

In 1975, Phan Huynh Dieu went to Ho Chi Minh City and worked for the city’s Music Association. He composed over 100 songs with beautiful melodies and lyrics, more than half of them recreated from famous poems including ‘Hanh khuc ngay va dem’ (The March of Day and Night), ‘Bong cay Konia’ (Shade Of The Konia Tree), ‘Thuyen va bien’ (Boat and sea), ‘Nhung anh sao dem’ (Starlight at Night), ‘O hai dau noi nho’ (At Two Ends of Nostalgia).

The late musician was also known for many children’s songs such as ‘Doi ken ti hon’ (Tiny trumpet team) and ‘Nho on Bac’ (Be grateful to Uncle Ho).

He was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts in recognition of his great contributions to the country’s music industry.
