Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts announced on July 19 that paintings at the on-going Paintings Returned from Europe Exhibition will be further researched after accusations that they have been wrongly attributed.

Painter Thanh Chuong said his painting is on display under Ta Ty name

The announcement came after an urgent meeting of leaders of The Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts and researchers to discuss the authenticity of the paintings.

The museum has claimed that 15 of the 17 paintings aren't of clear origin, but have yet to provide any evidence to justify their claims of forgeries. Two other paintings, one inscribed with the name Ta Ty and another attributed to Sy Ngoc appear to actually belong to other painters. All the paintings are still being kept at the museum for research.

Painter Luong Xuan Doan, vice chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, also said the paintings were wrongly attributed and investigators would use forensics to solve this case. He went on to say that there were a lot of forged and misattributed paintings are being trade in domestic and international markets.

Journalist Ly Doi from Culture and Sport Newspaper, said if collector Vu Xuan Chung was a victim and unaware that the paintings are fake, he could bring this case to court.

"He should file a denunciation letter to the French Embassy in Vietnam to sue the seller," Doi said. "Foreign media outlets like AP, Reuters or CNN may be willing to help him bring this case to global light."

The Paintings Returned from Europe Exhibition opens from July 10 to 21 to introduce 17 paintings by famous Vietnamese artists. Some people who went to the exhibition claimed that some of the paintings were fake.

Painter Nguyen Thanh Chuong said he was shocked to see one of his paintings on display when he attended the exhibition. According to Chuong, one painting under the name Ta Ty dated back to 1952 is actually his painting that was completed in 1970.
