Xoan and Bai Choi singings among top 10 outstanding cultural events of 2017
Xoan and Bai Choi singing lead the top 10 outstanding events of 2017 announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Xoan and Bai Choi singing were recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The decision was made at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Republic of Korea, on December 8, 2017.
Xoan singing in Phu Tho Province is also the first intangible cultural heritage that was cleared of the status as an element of heritage in need of urgent safeguarding as it was scarcely practised by the locals. It was considered evidence of Vietnam's multiculturalism.
The Russian Cultural Days in Vietnam, part of the cultural co-operative programme during the period of 2016-2018, is in the third place. It was held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in conjunction with the Russian Ministry of Culture, and other relevant agencies.
"The ministry didn't include negative events not because we want to hide the bad side. We want to fix all shortcomings and aim for a better year," Binh said. "The list will motivate everyone in the cultural sector to try better in the new year."
Departments of culture, sports and tourism in all provinces and cities nominated 64 events including 42 for cultural events, 11 for sports, and 11 for tourism. Residents were able to vote on the ministry's website from January 3 to 9. Over 150 reporters voted at the ministry's headquarters on January 9.
Top 10 outstanding events of 2017:

9. Politburo announced tourism as spearhead economic sector.
10. Tourism sector won many awards by World Tourism Organisation.
