On April 9, the National Library of Vietnam announced its plans to organise the 2018 book festival, which will take place from April 19-24 in Hanoi, as part of activities to mark Vietnam Book Day (April 21), and World Book and Copyright Day (April 23).

This year’s event aims to recognise the important role that books play in social life and acknowledge the contributions of collectors, composers, and printing and publishing houses in the promotion of the book reading movement among the community.

It also raises public awareness about the importance of reading books, while heightening the responsibilities of relevant agencies and social organisations in building a culture of reading in Vietnam.

Diverse and exciting activities are planned for the event at the National Library of Vietnam, including an exhibition displaying documents on the role of books and knowledge in social life, the benefits of literacy to accumulating useful knowledge, staying abreast of developments in science and modern technology, and developing a broad understanding of the world as the best preparation for the rapidly changing times.

The Vietnam Publishers Association will host their first national awards ceremony with the participation of a large number of publishers, and books under consideration for big prizes in different categories.

In addition, exchanges will be held between readers and authors, with the participation of historian Duong Trung Quoc, author Nguyen Huy Thang, Tran Chi Nghia, researcher Bui Viet Thang, poet Huu Thinh, and Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung.

A children’s painting contest on the theme of Hanoi will be held during the event. Organisers will receive funding from individuals and organisations to support libraries in remote areas.
