The information was given by Iwata Jinichi, head of Japan’s organising board of Fukuro Festival who had a meeting with vice chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Van Suu.

According to Iwata Jinichi, the Fukuro Festival began in 1968 as a promotional event for four local shopping districts on the west side of Ikebukuro Station. Since then, it has grown to be one of the largest events in the area, with the festival taking in the entire neighbourhood of Ikebukuro in a festive atmosphere.

The festival includes an opening ceremony as well as Mikoshi (portable shoulder-borne shrines) parades, Taiko drum shows, lion dances, Hayashi festival music, Yosakoi dancing and an Okinawan Eisa Dance show.

The festival often attracts up to 5,000 performers and businesses. This year, it will be held in Toshima District, Tokyo, in October.

Jinichi said that Toshima was a locality with many cultural identities and would welcome Vietnamese visitors.

A Japanese cherry festival recently took place at Ly Thai To flower garden in Hanoi.

Vice chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Van Suu said the Yosakoi dance in Hanoi would lure visitors to Hanoi’s pedestrian streets.
