Director Luong Dinh Dung said that he had completed his new independent film, Drowsy City, and planned to bring it to various international film festivals before its official release in Vietnam this August.

A scene from the Drowsy City

The film revolves around a 25-year-old man who lives in an abandoned house and slaughters chickens for hire. His usual routine is affected by three men and a woman who move into the area to hide.

Dung said he wrote the script over a decade ago. For him, this is a mix of different colours, visual language and the real and unreal.

When talking about the film title, he said, "The city is also a character. Film festivals will help market the film. If I release the film in Vietnam now, it will be more difficult to attract attention. It's different if I get a good impression at film festivals."

The independent film costs only VND1bn (USD45,000), which is much lower than Dung's previous 578 with a budget of VND60bn or Cha Cong Con (Father and Son) that cost USD18bn. However, Dung said he or the film didn't need any more money.

"The important thing is will your visual language and your narrative be convincing?" he said.

Regarding his trend to use amateur actors, Dung said he liked exploring and experimenting and was very satisfied with the cast. The Drowsy City had its post-production completed in South Korea and Thailand. Dung said he also invited an international composer who had won many awards to work on the film.

He said, "Working on Drowsy City, I no longer had the anxiety and stress like when I was working on my first film."

Cha Cong Con is Dung's most well-known film yet. It received the best Asian film prize at the 36th Fajr International Film Festival held in Tehran, Iran. It won 16 prizes and 15 nominations at both local and international film festivals. It has been screened at eight states of the US and 10 other countries, including Canada, Italy, Thailand, Estonia, India and Uruguay.
