The creative group Hanoi Arts for Youth (HAY) is performing an opera in English with Vietnamese subtitles entitled “Nobody’s boy”, based on the famous novel of the same name from renowned author Hector Malot, at 8pm from July 16 to 18 at the Youth Theater in Hanoi. The book was part of the childhood of many generations of readers worldwide and in Vietnam was a best-selling children’s title.

Familiar characters from the novel will appear on stage for the first time, played by young amateur actors.

The spirit of the novel, depicting the adventures of Remy, the main character, Mattia, Lise, Arthur, Vitalis, and Lady Milligan, dogs Capi, Zerbino, and Dolce, and monkey Joli-Cœur will appear in nearly 20 newly-composed English songs sung live on stage. The passion of the young actors together with classical music and modern stage effects make the opera attractive from beginning to end.

The opera was written and directed by Nguyen Hoang Tung, the music composed by Nguyen Nhat Minh, with choreography from Nguyen Duc Sang, and features 50 student actors.

Earlier, the opera Matilda, adapted from the novel of the same name by English author Roald Dahl, was also staged and performed by the HAY group.

The HAY team consists of individuals from many different careers and nationalities with the same common interest in art. With an aspiration to bring human cultural heritage, especially classical literature and music from Europe, closer to Vietnamese audiences, they have jointly created musical projects for children adapted from renowned classic literature. All projects are performed in English. All of the music and English songs are created by a group of Vietnamese artists, bringing the style and creative philosophy of the Vietnamese people.

It is a great playground for young people to express their talent in art and the English language and learn about cross-continental cultures.
