Korean film director named 2019 Asian of the Year

The Asia Journalist Association has selected and announced Korean film director Bong Joon-ho as the 2019 Asian of the Year.

Since his debut in 1994 with the short film White Man, Bong has evoked deep empathy in his audiences by delving into the paradoxes and dark sides of society in films such as Memories of Murder (2003) and The Host (2006).


This year, he unveiled Parasite, in which he approaches and exposes the class structure and conflict from a sociological perspective. Parasite will soon be released in the U.S. Bong won the Palm d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

On the year of the Korean film industry’s centennial anniversary, Bong is considered to be the greatest Korean film director.Bong will receive the Asian of the Year award from the Asia Journalist Association on November 11th.

Previous awardees include Indonesian President Joko Widodo (2016), Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, Alibaba Group co-founder Jack Ma (2017), Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and Korean Football Manager Park Hang-seo (2018).

November 11th, the date of the award ceremony, is also the 8th anniversary of the first publication of the AsiaN. The Asia Journalist Association, founded in 2004 with the solidarity of over 500 reporters from 50 Asian countries, played a central role in the publication of the AsiaN.

The AsiaN, founded in 2011, is an unprecedented medium that involves the cooperation of more than 100 veteran reporters from over 30 countries that are affiliated with the Asia Journalist Association.Published in three languages, Korean, English, and Arabic, the AsiaN produces and distributes Asian news from the Asian viewpoint.

With accordance to its motto of “Inspiring Asia, Empowering People, Leading Change”, the AsiaN reports various news from an accurate, fair, and balanced perspective. Especially in the wake of fake news, the AsiaN and its teams of international reporters are working heart and soul to protect the spirit of journalism.
