Ho Chi Minh City authorities have proposed to the Ministry of Defence to seek UNESCO recognition for Cu Chi Tunnels as a World Heritage Site.

Cu Chi Tunnel System

Cu Chi Tunnels have been recognised as a special national heritage site since 2015 for its historical, cultural and creative values. Cu Chi Tunnels is a typical military camping site during the war and played an important role in the liberation process.

Many notable leaders like Nguyen Van Linh, Vo Van Kiet, Mai Chi Tho and Tran Hai Phung lived and issued orders from there during the wartime.

From 1961 to 1975, Cu Chi Tunnels housed many soldiers and it was also where plans and war strategies were made. Nowadays, the 200km tunnel system is still well-preserved. The multi-layered tunnels had everything needed for life and fight against the weapons at that time.

HCM City People's Committee said it is a historic symbol for the guerrilla war and people's war as well as the creativity of the Vietnamese people. It has an important role in education about traditional history, culture, as well as knowledge, science and architecture about the military.

In addition, it is a popular site for tourists in HCM City.

According to HCM City People's Committee, the Cu Chi Tunnel System meets criteria about outstanding universal value, integrity and authenticity as stated by the UNESCO.

On May 25, HCM City People Committee submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism about setting up a dossier to seek UNESCO's recognition of Cu Chi Tunnels as a World Heritage Site.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism responded that HCM City authorities must also gather opinions from the Ministry of Defence.

If the proposal is approved, HCM City authorities will ask the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to work with related agencies to follow the directives from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
