Anna Doan, the organiser of the project, described how the idea for a "Choir of Hope" sprung up during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Malaysia when anti-epidemic measures severely affected a range of community activities, especially those involving live events with large numbers of people.

The project aims to connect the Vietnamese community in Malaysia whilst simultaneously conveying messages of optimism and hope moving forward, Doan said.

These efforts therefore not only honour the values of love, solidarity, and optimism of the Vietnamese community in Malaysia, but also encapsulate their warmth, love, and nostalgia towards their home country, she added.

Originally launched in December, the project has received support from the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia, along with other Vietnamese societies based there, including the Vietnamese Business Association, the Vietnam Women's Union, and Kova Paint International Co., Ltd.

The event involved the participation of approximately 100 people, ranging from four-year-old children to women over the age of 60, in addition to those who are living and working in many COVID-19 "hotspots" throughout Malaysia, such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and those from two COVID-19 quarantine zones based in Vietnam.
