Nam Dinh City People's Committee and Nam Dinh Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism already submitted an official document asking for permission to suspend the Tran Temple Festival. Nam Dinh People's Committee approved the proposal after reviewing Covid-19 prevention plans for Tet and Spring 2021.

Nguyen Tien Dung, director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, confirmed the news and said that there were still many risks of mass exposure to Covid-19 and potential community cases.

This is the second year Tran Temple Festival has been suspended due to Covid-19.

Tran Temple Festival is traditionally held on the night of 14th day of the first lunar month. The seal-opening ceremony there is an important event that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The ceremony was first held by the Tran Dynasty in 1239 to worship heaven, earth and their ancestors. The Tran Kings opened the royal seal to signal a return to normal work on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

Over 2,000 police were deployed to Tran Temple to ensure security for the festival in 2019 due to the overwhelming number of visitors.
