The artist's wife, People's Artist, actress Ngoc Lan shared with Dantri/Dtinews that he died at 4.30pm on September 15, and his funeral would be held at the National Funeral Hall, No.5 Tran Thanh Tong street, Hanoi on September 22.
His grandson Dinh Tuan Vu, a young director, also announced the news on his Facebook account, which reads: “My grandfather passed away peacefully and that was the only consolation in this great pain. Farewell, my beloved grandfather.”

Ngo Manh Lan was born in 1934 in Hanoi's Thanh Tri District. He lived in a family where many members are artists. His wife is People's Artist, actress Ngoc Lan, his daughter is Dr Ngo Phuong Lan, a film critic and former director of the Cinema Department, and his grandson is director Dinh Tuan Vu.
He was awarded the title of People’s Artist in 1997 and received the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2007.

Ngo Manh Lan won many acclaimed awards including Golden Lotus Awards, Silver Lotus Awards, as well as many Certificates of Merit from the Jury at Vietnamese Film Festivals and a number of international awards such as Silver Pelican at the International Animation Film Festival in Mamaia (Romania) in 1966 for the film Kitten and Golden Dove at the Leipzig International Film Festival (1970) for the film The Tale of Saint Giong.

People's Artist Ngoc Lan said that People's Artist Ngo Manh Lan was her first and only love. They first met in Moscow and had been together until he died.
