German coach leads Vietnam football team

German Falko Goetz will be the head coach of Vietnam ’s national football squad and Olympic team for the next two years.

Goetz, 49, and Tran Quoc Tuan, Secretary General of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) signed a contract in Hanoi on June 6.

The new coach said he hoped that with 30 years of experience in football he would be able to contribute to Vietnam ’s football development, and pledged to actively engage in nurturing the country’s football talent.

He planned to give priority to leading the national football team in preparation for the first match of the 2014 World Cup and the U23 team at the 26 th Southeast Asian Games ( SEA Games), to be held in Indonesia in November.

The experienced Goetz coached elite teams in Europe, including Hertha Berlin in 2004-07. During his playing career, he played as a forward for Dynamo, Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray and Hertha Berlin.
