Superstar swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien

Vietnam now have 48 gold medals, 23 silvers and 44 bronzes. Singapore topped the tally with 60 gold medals and Thailand was third with 45 gold medals. 

Superstar swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien continued their record-breaking performance with her seventh gold medal in the women’s 400m freestyle and got her seventh record. 

She surged ahead right from the start and never looked back before pulling away to touch the pad at 4:08.66 seconds, beating the previous record of 4:10.75 established by Khoo Cai Lin of Malaysia. 

Khoo came in second with a time of 4:17.79 while the third place belonged to Himathongkom Ammiga of Thailand. 

Lam Quang Nhat met no challenge in defending his title in the men’s 1500m freestyle event with a record-breaking time of 15:31.03 minutes, 7.20 seconds ahead of Prawira Aflah Fadlan of Indonesia. Yeap Kevin Soon Choy of Malaysia came in third. 

In athletics, Vietnam took gold medals in both men’s and women’s 800m events. Duong Van Thai also retained his title, finishing the race at 1:51.43 minutes while Do Thi Thao ended the race at 2:05.22. 

Nguyen Thi Huyen made her to the list of gold medallists in athletics at a Southeast Asian (SEA) Games for the first time with a record-breaking victory in the women’s 400m hurdles event. 

Huyen crossed the finish line with a time of 56.15 seconds, shaving 0.63 seconds off the old record set by Srithoa Reawadee of Thailand in 1995. 

Prasad Dipna Lim of Singapore took silver with 59.24 and Winatho Wassana of Thailand clinched bronze with 1:01.69. 

Nguyen Van Hue helped Vietnam return to its domination in the men’s decathlon by winning a gold medal with a score of 7232 points. 

Cid Jesson Ramil of Phillipines came in second with 7065 while the bronze went to another Filipino Ubas Janry. 

Le Trong Hinh won the third gold medal for Vietnam in athletics as he powered his way in the straight to cross the finish line at 20.89 seconds, ahead of Jaran Sathoengram and Jirapong Meenapra, both from Thailand. 

Quach Cong Lich won a silver in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 50.29 seconds and Bui Thi Thu Thao clinched a silver in the women’s long jump with her best jump of 6.65m. 

Truong Dinh Hoang won the third gold medal in boxing after beating Khankhokkhruea Aphisit of Thailand 3-0 in the final. 

Boxing also had a successful day with two gold medals from Le Thi Bang in the women’s bantam weight 54kg category and Nguyen Thi Yen in the women’s flyweight 51kg class. 

Boxer Nguyen Van Hai got a silver in the men’s lightweight 60kg class. 

Pencak Silat got the first gold medal through Hoang Quang Trung, who earned 464 points in the men’s tunggal final. 

Previously, gymnasts won four gold medals. Two of them came from Dinh Phuong Thanh, the men’s individual all-around gold medallist, in the parallel bars and the horizontal bar. 

The two others were carried off by Phan Thi Ha Thanh in the women’s beam and Le Thanh Tung in the men’s vault. 

In football, Vietnam lost 3-1 to Thailand in the last Group B match and finished the group as runners-up. 

In the semifinals, Vietnam will meet the second-placed team in Group A, which will be determined on June 11.
