Vietnam’s U19s secured a place in the quarter-finals of the U19 Asian Cup 2016 for the first time after they drew against Iraq.

Vietnam will meet host Bahrain in the next game on October 23. This is the first time Vietnam have made the knock-out quarter-final stage.

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan said he was proud of the team. He said, "The players showed their courage and resilience. I'm very proud of them and the fact that the U19s have reached the quarterfinal of the tournament for the first time. We set this goal and achieved it. The U19 team have written a new chapter in Vietnamese football history."

Iraq's coach Abbas Atiyah said even though many key players didn't play in the match, the substituted players had played well. Atiyah said he used nine replacements to help the players gain more experience, while resting his best team for the quarter-finals.

He was worried that Iraq wouldn't have time to prepare for the finals as they had only 10 days to call up the squad and some players arrived late, but the result left him satisfied.

With one win over the DPRK and two draws against the UAE and Iraq, Vietnam completed their group-stage campaign in second place overall with five points, thereby joining leaders Iraq as Group B representatives in the quarterfinal round.
