Vietnamese grandmaster climbs to second place after important win

Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem has joined Yu Yangyi and Ding Liren, both from China, in second place at the ongoing 8th Hainan Danzhou Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament, after securing a crucial win against Vladimir Malakhov in the fourth round on July 12.

Following three rounds of consecutive draws, Liem (elo 2,726) finally tasted the joy of victory as he brilliantly finished off the Russian GM (elo 2,722) after 38 moves, despite playing as black.

With this triumph, the Vietnamese chess ace continued to preserve his unbeaten streak in the standard chess category, which has lasted since last September, when he lost to Dutch GM Anish Giri (elo 2,775) at the 2016 Chess Olympiad.

More importantly, the victory also gave Liem five addition elo points in the online world rankings, increasing his elo rating to 2,733 and elevating him to 27th position globally.

After the fourth round, Liem temporarily stands in second place with 2.5 points, alongside Yu Yangyi (elo 2,749) and Ding Liren (elo 2,783).

Chinese Wei Yi (elo 2,728) remains the leader of the title race with three points.

In the fifth round scheduled for today, Quang Liem will play as white against German GM Arkadij Naiditsch (elo 2,710).
