The starting gun for the Danang International Marathon 2017, Vietnam’s biggest annual professional marathon, will be fired on August 6 at Bien Dong Park in the central city of Da Nang.

Expecting to welcome more than 5,000 runners, the event offers a wide range of distances, including a 42-km marathon, a 21-km half-marathon, a 10-km run, and a 5-km run.

The marathon will follow a stretch of the city’s coastline and has runners crossing its iconic bridges. With an early morning start, runners setting out on the full marathon will be treated to an amazing sunrise and a taste of central Vietnam thanks to Da Nang’s spectacular beaches.

A Family Fun Day will be held on August 5, the day before the races, in Bien Dong Park, with various activities for runners as well as their families and non-runners. On race day, the marathon gets underway at 4.30am, with the last event, the 5-km run, starting at 7.20am.

The marathon is certified by IAAF - AIMS (International Association of Athletics Federations and Association of International Marathon and Distance Races), and will attract many athletes from different parts of the world. Last year’s event attracted 4,500 runners, of which 62 per cent were foreigners taking part in the 42-km and 21-km races.

Da Nang’s coastline stretches 30 km and is renowned for its pristine beaches with white sand and crystal-clear blue water, and is popular for fishing, water-skiing, diving, and yachting. According to Forbes magazine, the city has one of the six most beautiful beaches in the world. Its green environment, low pollution levels, and relatively easy traffic saw it listed as a first-class city, and it is considered one of the best cities in Vietnam to live in.
