At a working session with representatives from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) in Hanoi on February 8, the FIFA leader said that they would continue to support the project by providing financial resources, building of a laboratory and high-quality training room, and referee training, helping Vietnam complete young football training programmes in particular and promote its football development in general.

"FIFA has also selected Vietnam as one of the participants in a pilot project to develop women’s football in 18 months," Gianni Infantino said. "FIFA will send its experts to Vietnam to help the VFF build a long-term programme for the project."

FIFA president said he highly valued football achievements made by Vietnam in recent time, especially Vietnam's U20 football team’s presence at the U20 World Cup 2017; Vietnam's Futsal team playing in the semi-finals of the 2018 AFC Futsal Championship; and the U23 team’s success as the runner-up at the AFC U23 Championship 2018.

He attributed the results to efforts made by the Vietnamese Government in promoting the football’s development and expressed his belief that Vietnam’s football would reap more successes in the near future.

During his working visit to Vietnam on February 8, FIFA president also had a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien and took tour of VFF facilities and the youth football training centre in Vietnam.

PM Phuc said the Vietnamese government wanted favourable conditions for football to develop healthily and sustainably in the country.

"Football is really popular in Vietnam, which was reflected through the way Vietnamese fans celebrated the U23 team’s success as the runner-up at the AFC U23 Championship," Phuc told the FIFA delegation.

"The team’s matches strongly inspired Vietnamese people, and created a festive atmosphere across Vietnam. Their performances were also acknowledged and appreciated by foreign experts and media, he added.

PM Phuc also confirmed that the government will support FIFA's school football project in Vietnam, adding that the country hopes to receive more help from FIFA and its president, especially in coach and referee training programmes and training for young players.
