Wimbledon prize money rises 11.8%

Wimbledon prize money will total 38 million pounds for this year’s championships, a rise of 11.8%, the All England Club announced on Tuesday.

The men’s and women’s singles champions will receive 2.35 million pounds each - 100,000 more than in 2018.

* Premier League club West Ham United will introduce a new fan engagement platform allowing supporters to buy the right to vote on selected club decisions, following the example of French club Paris Saint Germain and Juventus of Italy. Socios.com, a blockchain-based fan engagement platform, allows supporters to buy fan 'tokens' or to earn or 'hunt' them through games, in order to take part in club polls.

* Montpellier veteran Souleymane Camara netted a late winner as they came from behind to beat Paris St Germain 3-2 in Ligue 1 on Tuesday as the champions continued their stuttering end to the season. It was a third defeat in their last four league games for PSG, who also let a two-goal lead slip in Saturday’s French Cup final before losing to Stade Rennes on penalties.

* Belgian soccer club Anderlecht have been hit with a 5-0 loss, a fine and an order to play a home match behind closed doors after their fans forced the abandonment of the club's game against Standard Liege earlier in April. Anderlecht fans threw flares and smoke bombs onto the pitch during the top flight league match in Liege on April 12, forcing it to be abandoned after just 32 minutes. The players had already been forced from the field twice before. Standard were leading 2-0 at the time and have now been awarded a 5-0 victory by the Belgian football association.

* Former Manchester United defender John O'Shea will retire from professional football at the end of the season, his current club Reading said on Tuesday. The 38-year-old's decision was announced on his birthday. He has spent the final season of his career at Reading after a seven-year stint at Sunderland.

* Bossier City in Louisiana, US has been confirmed as the final host city for the 2019 FIVB Women's Volleyball Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament. A total of 24 national teams will take part in the qualifiers. They are divided into six pools, with the winner of each group granted a direct ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

* The Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Ferrari's home race, is set to stay on the calendar until at least 2024 after the Automobile Club of Italy (ACI) and Formula One announced an agreement in principle. The ACI said its president Angelo Sticchi Damiani had been given a mandate to continue talks with Formula One on technical and commercial matters with the aim of signing a deal as soon as possible.
