Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong is expected to return to Vietnam later this month after failing to secure a long-term contract at a Belgian football club.

Some local newspapers said that Cong Phuong would return Vietnam on December 29 and will play for HCM City Football Club from next month.

In July, Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC signed a transfer deal for Cong Phuong to move to Belgian top-flight club Sint-Truidense.

However, during the stay in Belgium, Phuong failed to make an impression at the club. He failed to make the matchday squad for Sint-Truidense’s for 15 consecutive matches.

Phuong was only selected to play in the clash against Club Brugge in which Sint-Truidense lost 6-0.

HCM City FC spent USD110,790 on a six-month contract to have Phuong in the first half of 2020.

Many fans congratulated Phuong on his return, calling on the public to unfollow the Belgium football club’s fan page. They were upset that Phuong was repeatedly not named in the Belgian football club Sint-Truidense coach’s selection.

Before Phuong joined the club, Sint-Truidense’s fanpage had only 3,000 followers. After Phuong signed in July, the number rocketed to nearly 10,000, but has begun to fall-off following Phuong’s failure.
