Vovinam Vietnam marks return with national tournament

The 11th Vovinam Vietnam tournament opened in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai on June 23, marking the return of Vovinam Vietnam following a brief hiatus due to the spread of the novel coronavirus epidemic.


During the five-day tournament, a total of 287 martial artists are set to compete across 26 combat and 22 demonstration events as they strive to win the 48 sets of medals on offer.

In total, combat competitions span over 14 different weight categories for men, ranging from 45kg to 92kg, along with 12 different weight categories for women from 42kg to 75kg.

Demonstration competitions will be divided into different categories, including singles, doubles, and team events for both men and women.

Each team will be permitted to register for 50% of male or female competitions.

The tournament is being held with the purpose of unearthing fresh talent for the national team ahead of the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games which are scheduled to be held in Vietnam next year.
This is to due Vovinam set to become a competition event at the SEA Games 2021 after being absent from the tournament for three consecutive games.
