In order to attract more doctors and prevent doctors from leaving, Quang Nam Province will give financial support and other incentives to students who work at public hospitals.

Doctors will be given incentives in Quang Nam Province

The policy has just been issued by the chairman of Quang Nam Province People's Committee, Le Phuoc Thanh. Graduates from medical schools in Hanoi, Hue and HCM City that are younger than 45 can submit to the programme. Experienced doctors that also want to work in Quang Nam Province can be older than 45 years old.

Graduates with diplomas of average marks will be given a financial support of VND200 million (USD9,600), while the ones with outstanding marks will be given VND250 million. Specialists and interns will recieve VND300-350 million, while a PhD can earn VND500 million.

The financial support for doctors that agree to work at medical facilities in the districts of Nong Son, Tien Phuoc and Hiep Duc will increase by 0.1%. Doctors that agree to work at more difficult, rural districts such as Bac Tra My or Phuoc Son will have an increase of 0.2-0.4%.

In addition, Quang Nam Province will also give out VND100 million more so doctors can buy land for homes. In return, doctors must compensate twice the given amount if they violate the contract.

Previously, dozens of doctors in Quang Nam and Danang provinces had left district-level hospitals to work at private hospitals.

According to the Ministry of Health, low payment remains urgent issue. However, hospitals have said they could not raise payment.

The monthly salary of a doctor at a central hospital is only VND5-8 million. On the other hand, the salaries of doctors at private hospitals is around VND30-60 million a month. Even a nurse's wage can be as high as VND20 million a month.

Quang Nam authorities said they hope they can ease the doctor shortage and overload at public hospitals with the newly-issued programme.
