Thousands flock to General Giap’s tomb

Despite heavy rains and flooding triggered by a recent typhoon, thousands of people from around the country continue to pay tribute to General Giap in Quang Binh Province.

 

Waiting to pay tribute to General Giap at his tomb

Border soldiers who are responsible for guarding the last resting place of late General Vo Nguyen Giap in Vung Chua – Dao Yen in Quang Trach District, said on average over 1,000 people come to pay tribute to the great military leader each day.

“Since the day General Giap was buried there has been a nonstop flow of people coming all day and night despite severe weather. Many came from as far as the southern cape province of Ca Mau, Kien Giang Province’s Phu Quoc island or Ha Giang Province in the northwest,” said Nguyen Ngoc An, a local border soldier responsible for guest registration.

Meritorious Teacher Le Duc Han, together with over 40 other teachers from central Ha Tinh Province’s Thach Ha District, recently visited General Giap’s tomb.

“Like many other Vietnamese citizens, teachers highly respect and mourn over the loss of General Giap. We hope that younger generations will take General Giap as an excellent exampleto contribute more to the national development,” Han said.

 

Thousands of flock to General Giap’s tomb daily

The Ministry of National Defence assigned the Border Soldier Headquarters of Quang Binh Province to guard General Giap’s last resting place.

Senior-lieutenant colonel Pham Xuan Dieu, second in command of the headquarters, said that apart from guarding the area, solders guided visitors to ensure order and security.

On October 12, a working group of the provincial Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism travelled to Vung Chua – Dao Yen to conduct a study before proposing recognition of Giap’s tomb as a national historic site.
