Local authorities in Danang City want local women to shed their clothing and inhibitions to make the beaches more attractive for tourists.

The municipal People’s Council discussed the issue as local women were hesitant about wearing western-style swimsuits at the beach. They prefer casual clothing, such as shorts, T-shirts and tank-tops, rather than bikinis.

Too diversified costumes on Danang beaches

Duong Thi Duc, 34, from Hanoi, said, “We should wear suitable costumes in particular circumstances like parties, offices and swimming. I like to wear a bikini for swimming as it is more comfortable."

Local women are hesitant about wearing such scanty clothing on the beach.

“I feel a bit fearful to wear bikini and meet acquaintances as I’m not confident about my body,” said Tran Thi Hong, 42, a local woman in Danang’s Ngu Hanh Son District.

“People should be free to wear whatever they want when they go to the beach,” said Ha Thi Nha, 20, from Danang’s Hai Chau District.

“We often go swimming at the beach whenever we want, after school, doing exercise and attending school, so we don’t always take along a bikini,” she said.

Many young people in the city agree that local women should wear bikinis when swimming in the beach.

Bui Thi Thanh Thao, a student of Da Nang Technical University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said, “I do think that it’s high time for Danang take measures to accelerate its tourism development and change local residents’ mind to feel free to wear bikinis on the beach."

Many local people in the city disagreed with a proposal by an official of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to set up restricted beaches for bikinis. They claimed that it would be unfair to ban people from using certain beaches because of what they chose to wear.

“It’s inadequate to force people to wear bikinis on the beach. We should just encourage them to use suitable and beautiful costumes on the beach to create a more aesthetic scene,” said Nguyen Duc Vu, deputy head of the management board for Son Tra peninsula and Danang beaches.

Tran Chi Cuong, deputy director of the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the department has proposed the municipal government to work out policies to encourage local women to wear suitable costumes on the beach.

“It’s a good idea to develop beautiful and dynamic beaches in Danang by taking a bold step in costumes and change people’s awareness of bikinis,” said Le Thi My Hanh, vice chairwoman of the city’s union of Vietnamese women.
