Nghe An provincial authorities promised to deal with illegal workers overseas as about 12,408 Vietnamese are working illegally in neighbouring countries.

Huong Son Cooperative created jobs for over 50 people.

According to Nghe An Province Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, about 12,408 Vietnamese are working illegally in neighbouring countries. 5,692 workers are in Laos, 5,488 in China, 564 in Thailand and 663 in Cambodia.

Most of them are from border districts and work in construction, mining and agriculture industries for VND15m (USD660) to 20m a month. They are not entitled to social insurance or protected by the laws of either Vietnam or the host countries.

Many poor and ethnic people in the border areas are easily taken advantage of and tricked into doing hard work overseas.

In order to deal with the problem, Nghe An authorities have started a public awareness programme along with various projects to provide jobs to the locals, help them switch jobs or become a legally-recognised guest worker.

The local authorities have also tried to help workers who are detained and returned to Vietnam. They are calling for investment to generate jobs in Nghe An and educating locals on how to immigrate to other countries. Those who illegally send workers overseas will be strictly dealt with.

Dang Cao Thang, deputy director of the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, suggested collaborating with other countries to build a comprehensive legal framework for protecting and managing workers.
