Buildings illegally constructed under Haiphong overpass
Ten buildings under construction beneath a Hanoi-Haiphong Highway overpass seem to have been ignored by the authorities.
The buildings located in Haiphong City’s Kien Thuy District are nearly finished.
A worker at the site said that the buildings seemed to be a billiards hall, building materials shop and restaurants. He added that construction had been carried out for several months.
According to chairman of Kien Thuy District People’s Committee Bui Duc Thao, the space under the overpass is managed by the local Transport Board and the Hanoi-Haiphong Highway investor Vietnam Infrastructure Development And Finance Investment Joint Stock Company (Vidifi).
Thao guessed that the construction might have been allowed by the investor and the management agency and so far Vidifi had taken no action.
Nguyen Van Huyen, head of Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, said such buildings were not permitted under bridges and the directorate would work with Vidifi on the problem.
The highway management board admitted the violation, saying that until now, it has not yet caused any problems. The board added that they would persuade local people to stop such building work.
