Local access to Danang beach still blocked
Local people in Danang City's Ngu Hanh Son District are complaining about the slow re-opening of roads to the beaches which have been blocked by beach-side resorts.
Near Khue My Ward are Son Thuy, Ngu Hanh Son and My Khe beaches which are crowded with tourists in summer.
"On the same route but other wards have the ocean view and public beaches while people in Khue My Ward don't even have any path to the beach. We have a nice beach and that's why many resorts have been built here. But do the locals have to be blocked from the sea?" said Lan Anh, a local in Khue My Ward.
Another local Nguyen Mai is also upset that 10km of the beach was blocked by resorts and he wanted the authorities to reopen the beaches for locals. "It's a public beach. You can't sell or lease it out," he said.
In 2016, Danang City authorities approved a plan to open five routes to the beach, located between the resort projects. According to the Department of Construction, it will cost the city from VND10bn (USD438,000) to VND15bn to realise the plan. Danang authorities hope private investors will participate to help save the city budget. Nothing has been done yet to help the locals access the beach.
In early December, Vu Quang Hung, director of the Department of Construction, said the city would allocate VND10bn for the project.
One NA deputy in Danang asked whether there was any personal interest involved when 8,000 square metres of land were allocated to firms and the city authorities had no intention of recovering any land to open a road to the beach. Hung said the city authorities had allocated many plots of land to firms to manage and hadn't collected any fees. However, the practice is no longer suitable and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment is planning to start collecting fees.
"After a series of meetings in two years, the road to the beach remains on paper and the locals are asked to wait for another year. I hope the authorities will realise their promises," said Nguyen Mai, a resident in Danang City.
