25 scrap containers have been found at Cat Lai Port in HCM City recently despite the government’s tightened controls over scrap imports.

According to HCM City Customs Department, among these containers, five, which belong to Tri Quang Transportation Services Trading Company Limited in District 2’s Binh Trung Dong Ward, included electronic and plastic wastes.

However, in the customs declaration, the firm reported that the containers are machines imported from Japan.

The customs officers recently detected 20 other scrap containers at the port. However, the owners of these containers have not yet been disclosed.

Saigon Port Area 1 Customs Office reported that as of October 2, some 4,000 containers storing scrap lay abandoned at Cat Lai Port, including more than 3,000 containers that had been left at the port for more than three months.

Meanwhile, 737 containers have been stored for more than 90 days and 507 others have sat for between 30-90 days at ports in northern Haiphong City.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has recently directed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to not issue new scrap import certifications or to extend the validation of existing certificates.

The ministry only considers granting permits to firms which certify fulfilment of environment protection conditions for imports, when the direct importer can prove a demand for and ability to use the scrap in production.
