Colonel Nguyen Dinh Tran, head of Nghe An Immigration Office, said that the number of people who came to make or extend visas after Tet holiday had sharply increased. They received 1,000 of people each day, and up to 2,000 on some of the busiest days.

“We had to ask for two more officers, eight police and 11 interns to help,” he said.

Most of them wanted to make or extended their visas to go on business trips in Laos and Thailand. A similar situation can also be seen at the Immigration Office in Ha Tinh Province.

Nguyen Viet Hoang from Cam Xuyen District said, “There are no jobs at my town. Everyone is going to Laos and Thailand to find jobs so I just followed them. It’s crowded but the officers gave me clear instructions.”

Incomplete statistics show that tens of thousands of people in Nghe An and Ha Tinh are working in Laos and Thailand.

About 1,500 people in Dien Thap Commune, Nghe An Province, are working in Laos. According to the locals, their lives have changed for the better. Many households were able to escape poverty and could afford to buy cars and houses.

Vo Xuan Phong, head of the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs in Can Loc District, Ha Tinh Province, said they had 4,000 people working in Thailand and escaped poverty.

Some people brought their whole family overseas as they earned VND7m (USD303) to VND13m per month.
