Stricter measures against drunk driving called for
A newly-released report has shown that 90% of traffic accidents caused by motorbikes relate to alcohol.
According to the police reports, 4% of traffic accidents caused by motorbikes were related to alcohol. This number was 5% in HCM City and 12% in Binh Duong.
However, statistics from local hospitals show a much higher percentage. 90% of traffic accidents caused by motorbikes related to alcohol use. The drivers were mostly male and the accidents often occurred at night, especially during the weekend.
68% of restaurant customers drove themselves home after drinking. As a result, they committed several violations such as not turning on the signals, driving in the wrong lanes or driving with their lights off. The drivers themselves often thought they were sober and safe enough to drive a short distance.
The risk of causing accidents for drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 20m per 100ml is three times higher than normal, while this rate is seven times higher if they have a blood alcohol concentration of 50mg per 100ml.
The authorities were urged to impose stricter punishments to the violators and carry out inspections more frequently to raise public awareness and encourage the use of taxis after drinking.
According to the WHO, in 2012, 36% of drivers in traffic accidents in Vietnam had excessive alcohol levels. In 2016, the National Traffic Safety Committee also announced that nearly 40% of the accidents were caused by drunk driving. Many measures have been applied but nothing proved effective.
