The red maple trees planted along Hanoi's Tran Duy Hung Street has withered as Autumn arrived.

Last year, Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung said that Hanoi wanted to grow one million trees by 2020, aiming to raise the number of trees to 8 square metres per capita. Red maple trees were planted on several local streets including Nguyen Chi Thanh, Lang Ha and Tran Duy Hung.

Duc Loc Ltd Co. which imports trees said there are different kinds of red maple trees and many of them can survive in the temperatures found in northern Vietnam. However, many experts have voiced concerns, saying that the project was infeasible because maple trees would require great care and must avoid being soaked in the sun.

In the cool weather, leaves of the maple trees often turn to red in the autumn. However, as summer has passed in Vietnam, the trees along Tran Duy Hung Street is withering without the leaves turning red.

Some dead trees have been removed.
