A cogongrass garden by Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake has been seriously destroyed by people flocking there to take photos.

The garden is part of a project to upgrade areas around the lake which was completed last September. This kind of cogongrass is originated from Japan.

Being located near Ngoc Son Temple, the cogongrass garden has attracted many visitors. However, just after a short time, much of the cogongrass beds have been tramped. People stepped on the cogongrass trees so much that have formed small paths in the garden.

Nguyen Thi Thanh, a local resident, said that it was a pity to see the garden harmed by the low awareness of visitors.

Workers had to fence the garden with bamboo sticks and ropes to prevent visitors from entering the garden, but this proved insufficient. They are now focusing on upgrading the garden.

Littering also remains rampant around Hoan Kiem Lake. People should protect the city’s environment, said horticulturist Nguyen Thi Vinh who works around the lake.
