A farmer in the northern province of Phu Tho has earned big profits from raising deer.

Nguyen Huu Oanh at his deer farm

Nguyen Huu Oanh started raising deer in 2010 after learning from farmers in the central region.

"I by chance watched a TV programme introducing deer raising by farmers in the central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh," he shared.

"I was very impressed by their work which can be highly profitable. I decided to travel to the region and learn from their experience. I've also learned a lot from books"

The farmer started with 10 young deer which he selected very carefully to make sure they were healthy and would have good antlers.

He revealed that good deer should be born by healthy parents and the fathers should give a good amount of antlers.

Meanwhile, raising the deer is rather simple as their main foods include leaves, grass, rice and corn.

After 10 years, Oanh now has a herd of 30 deer of which 10 provide antler velvet.

He earns some VND800 million a year from selling antlers and young deer.

The farmer is also sharing experiences with many people in his area who are following him to raise the animals.

According to chairman of Van Ban Communal People's Committee, Tran Minh Xuan, deer raising is bringing much higher incomes to local farmers who used to live in poverty when just growing rice.

"The demand for deer velvet which is used as medicine for some health problems, is increasing and we are encouraging local farmers to follow Oanh to improve their lives," the official said.
