Many people in Hanoi are going camping at weekends as a way to stay away from crowds in the context of the city’s rocketing Covid-19 infections.

According to Hoang Quoc Hung, before the pandemic, he used to take his family to shopping malls or tour around Hanoi’s Old Quarter at weekends.

But since the pandemic, his family has chosen trips to Hanoi’s outskirts such as in Soc Son and Dong Anh districts for their picnics.

Kim Yen from Long Bien District said that places near Hanoi’s neighbouring localities are where her family goes. Sometimes, they go on picnics with the families of her friends. By late February, Yen held her son’s birthday party at a camping site in Soc Son.

Meanwhile, Minh Truong turned his car into a mobile home fully equipped with camping equipment for his family’s trips. They recently visited the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang to see snow.

Truong, who operates a business specialising in camping tools, has set up a Facebook group on camping for people to share their experiences.

Thanks to the higher demand, Truong’s company has also sold more products.

Families can prepare tents, tables and chairs, cooking utensils and food for their picnics.

Through camping, children are expected to learn about life skills and more about nature, particularly helping them to be away from electronic screens.

The owner of a camping site in Son Tay Town in Hanoi, said that since the Lunar holiday, despite the cold weather, dozens of groups have come there for relaxation on weekends.
