The rise in fuel prices to all-time high has prevented hundreds of fishing boats in the southern central province of Khanh Hoa from going to sea.

Rows of fishing boats are docked at Vinh Truong Fishing Port in Nha Trang City. The same situation is reported at Hon Ro Fishing Port.

Nguyen Van Hen, 51, whose boat is being kept at Ha Ra Wharf, said that each litre of oil is now priced at VND27,000 (USD1.17) compared to VND20,000 after the Lunar New Year in February.

Boats At Vinh Truong Fishing Port in Khanh Hoa

Boat KH93141TS with a crew of ten resumed operations after mooring at Vinh Truong Fishing Port for a fortnight. During the latest trip, the boat only caught a modest amount of fish.

Fisherman Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, 40, from Van Ninh District’s Van Gia Town, said that each day it costs his boat around VND4-5 million in fuel. “Now, my boat makes a profit of VND2-3 million per day, so each person is given VND200,000-300,000. So, I plan to temporarily halt my boat’s operation.”

Fisherman Huynh Van Nguyen from Vinh Truong Ward in Nha Trang wants to quit the job due to sharply rising fuel prices.

In the northern central province of Thanh Hoa, a large number of fishing boats are now being left unused due to the rocketing petroleum prices.

Le Van Thanh, director of Hoa Loc and Lach Hoi Port Management Board in Thanh Hoa, said that roughly 400 boats were docking at the two ports. Around half of them have halted their operation because of losses.

Thang added that the number of boats which were left unused temporarily would continue increasing.

Thanh Hoa is home to 6,700 fishing boats. Since the beginning of the year, thousands of them have operated infrequently with the majority being large boats. Many owners have sold their boats.
