A transgender couple in the southern province of Tay Ninh have just welcomed their first child.

Cong Phuong called Dantri/Dtinews to share that he had given birth to a healthy baby girl on November 9.

"I'm so happy," he said.

Cong Phuong and his wife Bich Tuyen are both transgender. Phuong was born a girl and used hormone therapy and breast surgery so that he could live as a man while his wife also used hormone therapy to change gender from a man to a woman.

The couple, who are both 36, knew each other through an LGBT community forum two years ago and their families supported their relationship.

Phuong said that he had used hormone therapy and breast surgery so that he can live as a man, but when he met Tuyen, he wanted to have children. However, they both thought that natural pregnancy would be difficult as both of them had used hormone therapy.

"When I found out that I was pregnant six months ago, we were very surprised and happy," he said. "We immediately organised a wedding and I received lots of support from my wife during my pregnancy. And now our baby has arrived safe and sound."

The man shared that he knew he was male at a young age, but he had tried to conceal it, so as not to make his mother sad.

"My sister is also transgender and my mother was distraught when my sister decided to have surgery to become a man," he said. "So I didn't dare to follow her until my mum died."

Phuong is a farmer while his wife works at a local factory. He said that although they live on a modest income, they are happy.

"Due to a lack of money, I stopped using hormones several months before getting pregnant," he said. "Meanwhile, my wife has not had transgender surgery. But we’ve been compensated by having this lovely baby."
