The Dutch Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City awarded Artist Le Quang Dinh with the EUR25,000 (USD 35,500) Prince Claus Award for his contribution to contemporary art.

The Dutch Consul General Jos Schellaars granted the prize for Aritist Le Quang Dinh
Le Quang Dinh and friends who co-founded Sàn Art.

Dinh is the first Vietnamese to receive the prize.

Born in 1968, in Kien Giang Province, Dinh left for the United States when he was 10 and later received a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in photography from New York Visual Arts School. When he was 25 years old, he came back Vietnam to live and work.

Dinh is considered one of the most influential contemporary artists in Vietnam. His works have been presented at 33 exhibitions inside and outside the country, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Fukuoka Art Museum, as well as others in Singapore, Germany, Australia and Italy.

In July, 2010, his works were selected for the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection in the US.

Many of his works condemn genocide and promote Vietnam as a tourist destination.

He founded two centres: Sàn Art, in Ho Chi Minh City, a non-profit art space for exhibiting the work of both international and Vietnamese artists, and the Vietnamese Art Organisation in Los Angeles.

The Dutch Prince Claus Fund was founded in 1997 to honour outstanding artists.

The fund has given over 150 prizes to artists in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean over the past 10 years.
