Vietnamese Talents Awards 2012 launched in HCM City

The organising board of Vietnamese Talents Awards 2012 held a launching ceremony in HCM City on May 21.

The event drew the participation of officials from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Health, Vietnam Study Encouragement Association, Vietnam Informatics Association, Vietnam National University-HCM City, and HCM City University of Technology, along with a number of donors.

On the same day, an exchange was organised in order to inform nearly 500 university students in HCM City about this year’s awards.

Pham Huy Hoan, editor-in-chief of Dantri/DTiNews said, “Vietnamese Talents Awards were initiated by Vietnam Study Encouragement Association in 2005. This year’s event will be the 8th of its kind organised in Vietnam. The categories of the awards have been expanded . In the past we only had information technology industry, but we've since added, first, natural science, and then applied sciences and health.”

Dr. Nguyen Long, General Secretary of the Vietnam Informatics Association, said all of the winning IT products show a high potential for application. Some products may be worth hundreds of million USD if they are successfully developed.

“Any students who win an award will have great chances in the business world after graduation," said Dr. Vu Dinh Thanh, Headmaster of HCM City University of Technology.

According to Bui Quoc Viet, from Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the event's main sponsor, several winning IT products have been applied and developed within the group.

On the ocassion, Vietnam Study Encouragement Association and VNPT jointly handed over 100 scholarships to students studying IT major at universities in HCM City.

For the IT sector, finalists will be divided into two groups: products that have already being successfully applied, and those with great potential for application.

This year’s awards will include two special prizes in the IT category for products which help deal with pressing issues in the education, healthcare and transportation industries, as well as a Young Innovation Award for finalists under 20.

The applied science category has drawn innovative products from a wide range of areas, such as mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, biology and earth sciences, which have proven applications.
