Vietnam to honour most outstanding citizens

Twenty people have been selected from a list of 119 nominees for the title of the most outstanding Vietnamese young people for 2013.

The selection was jointly made by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Vietnam Young Talent Support Fund.

Those selected have gained outstanding achievements in their fields, including studies, scientific research, production, business, national defense, social order, art and sports.

The organising board plans to organise online voting to select the 10 most outstanding people. The awarding ceremony is scheduled to be held on the anniversary of the Youth Union, on March 26.

The most prominent nominee was Dr. Le Anh Vinh, 30, who is the youngest associate professor in Vietnam. Vinh was also among top ten most outstanding citizens in Hanoi in 2013.

Currently, Vinh serves as deputy head of University of Education’s Department of Science and International Relations and won the silver medal at an international math contest in 2001 as well as gold medal in the Asian – Pacific Math Contest when in the 12th grade.

In 2005, Vinh went to university in Australia and did research at Harvard University from 2006 to 2010, where he acquired his PhD degree at the age of 27.

MA. Nguyen Hoang Khac Hieu, a psychologist and lecturer at HCM City Teachers’ University is also a favourite.

He has become famous for devising several short video clips to help people, especially young girl students deal with traumatic situations, such as motorbike robberies, theft or rape. The clips have been widely spread online, attracting hundreds of thousands of hits.
