The contest, which took place at Balewadi Stadiumin in Pune, India had the participation of 18 teams from 17 countries this year.

This was the fifth time the students from Lac Hong University won the national robotics contest, earning them the right to represent Vietnam to participate in the international contest. This year, Vietnam was also the only team that maintained a winning streak from the first round, beating Egypt in the quarter-final, Indonesia in the semi-final and finally taking the championship from Japan in the final round.

Robocon was established in 2002, and is organised by the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU). It includes students from over 20 countries in the Asia Pacific region. The teams are required to build robots to complete tasks within a designated time. Each year, one of the members of ABU hosts the competition.

Vietnam won the competition in 2002, 2004 and 2006. Since then, the championship usually went to the teams from China and Japan. From 2010, students from Lac Hong University have consistently participated in the finals, but have not been able to claim the prize until this year.
