 >>  Vietnamese elderly sets Asian record for mountain climbing

An 83-year-old man from Binh Duong Province has just conquered the Fansipan for the fourth time.

Huynh Van Rang, from from Thuan An Township, was recognised as the oldest person in Vietnam to have successfully climbed Fansipan in June.

Despite suffering some serious health problems in middle age, Rang retains his vitality in his later years. “I’ve practised dưỡng sinh (yang sheng) for over 30 years, so i found it easy to climb," he said.

Even though he has always had a passion for climbing, when he was younger, Rang was to busy working to do it much. Now his children pick destinations with high mountains for vacations, and in his retirement, Rang now is realsing his dream.

When he first decided to climb Fansipan, both his family and rangers tried to prevent him. After much persistence he was finally allowed to climb in 2005 at the age of 77. He found the experience so exhilarating that he climbed three more times in 2010, 2013 and, most recently, this year.

“Around two-thirds the way up, one of my shoes tore. I didn't have an extra pair so I just used some rope to keep it together. Once I reached the peak, all my tiredness went away and I just felt incredible joy," he said when talking about his latest time conquering the mountain.
